Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, Arizona State Board for Charter Schools

Johanna Medina is the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs for the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools (ASBCS). She is responsible for continuous monitoring and improvement of policies impacting the oversight and accountability of charter schools. She started as the Director of School Quality in 2011, overseeing the new charter applications and quality expansions of existing charters.

Prior to joining the ASBCS, Johanna served as the principal for a charter school in Laveen, Arizona. Her experience as a teacher and Curriculum Instructional Specialist, from 1998 to 2009, led her to focus on the importance of being an instructional leader and establishing sound systems to support improved student achievement.

Her teaching and leadership experience with charter schools has further developed the work she has contributed to the ASBCS. The focus of her work has included refinements to the monitoring and oversight process, implementation of a rigorous new charter application process, and the development of the operational performance framework.

Johanna draws on her educational background and professional experience as an educator, a charter school administrator, and her history with the ASBCS.

Johanna was born in Lima, Peru. She was primarily raised in Union City, New Jersey and Phoenix, Arizona where she grew up in diverse neighborhoods. She holds a BA from Arizona State University.
