NACSA is calling on Governor McKee to protect both families’ access to high-quality public schools. and the integrity of Rhode Island’s charter school system by vetoing legislation that would impose a moratorium on new public charter schools in Rhode Island.
Moratoriums are never the right solution. They limit access to high-quality schools. Rhode Island has built one of the strongest public charter school sectors in the country, and a moratorium would close the door on exactly the kinds of schools students deserve access to.
This legislation also blocks a school that has already completed Rhode Island’s rigorous authorization process from opening. Allowing the legislature to override authorizer decisions creates uncertainty and erodes trust in the very accountability structures that make charter authorization work. When authorizers are strong, families have strong options. Rhode Island’s, and all students deserve that.
