NACSA Urges Ohio Legislature to Pass Charter School Reform Bill

The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) fully supports Ohio House Bill 2 (HB 2) as passed by the conference committee today. We are pleased with the legislatures’ commitment to this issue and its immediate attention as it comes back into fall session.

HB 2 contains needed charter school oversight provisions that will strengthen accountability for both sponsors and schools, as well as increase operator transparency.

The bill will also clarify the state’s authorizer evaluation process and place restrictions on authorizing shopping, demonstrating the legislature acknowledges what NACSA knows to be true: that the charter sector is only as strong as its weakest authorizer.

If faithfully implemented, the bill’s provisions have the potential to create an environment of consistently high-performing charter schools that taxpayers demand and that children deserve.

The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) is an independent voice for effective charter school policy and thoughtful charter authorizing practices that lead to more great public schools. Our research, policy, and consultation work advances excellence and accountability in the charter school sector. With authorizers and other partners, we have built the gold standard for charter school authorizing. Through smart charter school growth, these authorizers will give hundreds of thousands of children an opportunity for a better education each year. More at www.qualitycharters.org
